Urdu Poets

Here is a complete list of urdu poets from 1900 until now. These poets are listed alphabetically, so you wont have any problem finding your favorite poet. Urdu Shayars or poets have worked immensely for the promotion of Urdu language and Urdu Literature. Urdu Poetry reached its peak in 19th century when there were very few poets writing in Urdu. Some of these poets were known for their Ghazals, some for Nazams and some of these poets are known for their Two Lines Poetry.

The history of Urdu Poets goes back to the 13th century when Amir Khusro wrote a poem after his mother and brother died. Then, Meera was a prominent poet in the 15th Century, Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah in 16th Century, and Poets like Mirza Mazhar Jan-e-Janaan, Siraj-ud-Din Ali Khan Arzu, Shah Mubarak Abroo and Wali Muhammad Wali were well known for their art in 17th Century. It was 18th Century when it really all kicked off when a lot of Urdu Poets made name for their literary work. Poets like Khwaja Mir Dard, Mir Taqi Mir, Insha Allah Khan, Bahadur Shah Zafar, Muhammad Ibrahim Khan Zauq and Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib served in the 18th century. 19th century was immensely important for promotion of Urdu Language and Urdu Poets. A huge number of Urdu Poets served the great Urdu Language with their great sense of Poetry. Poets like Momin Khan Momin, Amir Meenai, Dagh Dehlvi, Altaf Hussain Hali, Akbar Allahabadi, Hasrat Mohani, Jigar Moradabadi, Josh Malihabadi, Firaq Gorakhpuri and Allama Muhammad Iqbal were some of the most influential poets of this time. After that, thousands of Urdu Poets have emerged. They have made name for themselves and also worked their socks off for Urdu language. Poets like Hafeez Jalandhari was a prominent figure in the early 20th Century. List of Urdu Poets who were born after the start of 20th century is so huge that its almost impossible for any website to list their complete work.
